2007 Renzo Masi Chianti Riserva
Any time you can lay your hands on a wine for $10.00 or less, you’ve found a real bargain. Problem is… most cheap wine – especially cheap red wine – generally exhibits all the oenological savoir faire of Algerian bilge.
The 2007 Renzo Masi Chianti Riserva, however, is a marvelous exception to that rule. This riserva is produced in only the best years, is composed of 93% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, and 2% Colorino, and is released only after 30 months of aging.
Blackberry and dark cherry predominate on the palate, along with toasted oak and hint of smoke; the finish is dry, long, and lingering. And the 13.5% alcohol keeps this little beauty in perfect balance. This is a marvelous all-purpose, eminently quaffable vintage that, with the outset of cooler weather, will make a marvelous match for a variety of meat and pasta dishes.
This wine lists for $17.99, but the PA Liquor Control Board has it on sale for a mere $11.99 – an absolute steal. My advice is to stock up as quickly as possible.
This wine is normally priced at $15.99, but the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, in its oddly schizophrenic wisdom, is letting it go for a mere $9.99 per bottle. Never look a gift horse in the mouth… Snatch it up before the powers-that-be realize the error of their ways and raise the tariff.
Cheers!
