2008 Ravines Dry Riesling
Ravines Wine Cellars is a boutique winery located on the hillsides of Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. European winemaker/oenologist Morten Hallgren and his chef/foodie wife, Lisa, have created a diminutive, distinctive winery that crafts unique vintages by combining Old World winemaking traditions with New World innovation.
Mr. Hallgren’s 2008 Dry Riesling is truly a benchmark effort. The wine is exceptionally delicate, intensely crisp & refreshing (perfect for warm weather quaffing), and is decidedly food friendly. Initial floral and citrus notes yield to a lingering mineral finish backed by a vibrant acidity.
Most dry German and Alsatian Rieslings tantalize the tongue with just the subtlest hint of sweetness before turning bony at mid-palate. But the 2008 Ravines is delightfully & elegantly dry from the very outset and perfectly balanced by 12.5% alcohol and 03% residual sugar.
This wine sells for $16.99 per bottle; and I know that it is available in limited quantities at the following Pennsylvania LCB outlets: Villanova, Berwyn, Ardmore, and King of Prussia. If you enjoy Riesling, you can’t afford to pass this one up… But you’d better get a move on.
Cheers!
