Dining in Deutschland
A Few Thoughts on German Dining . . .
If you peruse guidebooks, as most people do, in search of suitable eateries, always consult several sources to compare and contrast (Michelin, Frommer's, Gault Millau). Various newspapers and magazines may also be of considerable assistance in this regard.
Interestingly enough, two of our best meals were consumed in eateries that are not listed in any guidebook (see MarkGraf and Aubergine ), although they have been around for five and nine years, respectively.
When in search of a restaurant, be sure to inquire at your hotel to ascertain which local eateries they may recommend. (Depending on the hotel, of course, this may also be a rather iffy proposition). Smaller hotels with no restaurant on the premises may be particularly helpful. And it is also beneficial to specify the type of establishment you may be seeking on a particular evening. Are you, for example, in the mood for seafood, old-fashioned German, French, Italian? Do you want to dress up a bit or go casual? Is money no object, or are you on a budget? All of these factors will help the concierge or hotel representative steer you in the right direction.
Another excellent stratagem is to seek recommendations at a good wine shop (after making a purchase, of course). On our various European sojourns, we have found this source to be extremely reliable.
Guten Appetit!
